What is the Mileage Log Book for Taxes?
Log it when you drive it, not in April. IRS Publication 463 says you can't deduct amounts you approximate or estimate, and it expects a record made at or near the time of each trip. This log is laid out around the details the publication lists for car expenses: the date, the miles for each business use, the business destination, the business purpose, and the total miles for the year.
What is inside?
- 100 log pages, 2,100 trip lines: date, start and end odometer, miles, destination and business purpose.
- Vehicle pages for two cars with year-start and year-end odometer readings.
- Parking and tolls log, kept separately from mileage.
- Monthly totals and a year-end worksheet for business miles and business-use percentage.
- Two pages of plain-English rules: commuting, round trips, weekly logging and how long to keep records.
Who is it for?
Self-employed people, gig and delivery drivers, real estate agents, contractors and anyone who drives for work.
Does it print a mileage rate or give tax advice?
No. This is a record book, not tax advice. It does not print a mileage rate, because the IRS sets a new one each year; the worksheet shows where to look it up. The current rate is on the IRS standard mileage rates page.
Can I try a page first?
Yes. The printable mileage log guide explains what to write down for each trip and has a free two-page sample you can print now. The same guide links to the printable PDF version on Etsy.
