What is Medicare and Social Security Made Simple?
Seven months to get it right. Your first chance to sign up for Medicare lasts 7 months, starting 3 months before the month you turn 65. Miss it without a Special Enrollment Period and the Part B late enrollment penalty lasts for as long as you have Part B. This book walks you through every Medicare and Social Security decision in the order you face them, in plain English.
What will be inside?
- When to sign up for Parts A and B, and when it's safe to wait because you're still working.
- The late penalties for Part B and Part D, and how to never pay them.
- Original Medicare plus Medigap, or Medicare Advantage, side by side, and why your one-time 6-month Medigap window matters.
- Part D drug plans and the review to do every fall during Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7.
- Social Security: when to claim, spouses, ex-spouses and survivors, and taxes on benefits.
- Help paying: Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help.
- 31 fill-in worksheets and checklists, including a month-by-month plan starting a year before 65.
Every figure in the book comes from Medicare.gov, CMS, Social Security or the IRS, with sources listed at the end of each chapter. It makes no plan recommendations and names no insurers: the book shows you how to compare, then points you to Medicare's Plan Finder and your free State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).
When will it be published?
After CMS releases the official 2027 Medicare figures, which the book needs. That release is expected between late October and mid-November 2026. The exact date is not set, so this page will change from "Coming soon" to a Buy on Amazon link when the book is live.
Where can I get help with my own Medicare questions?
This page and the book are general information, not legal, tax or financial advice, and neither one can tell you what to choose. For questions about your own situation, go to Medicare.gov or contact your free State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). You can find your state's SHIP at shiphelp.org.
